No other city of Russia has such abundance of magnificent masterpieces of architecture and sculpture, such number of the monuments created by the well-known masters. Many of these monuments have become emblems of St. Petersburg since old times.
St. Petersburg has three main symbols: the coat of arms, a flag and a hymn. In 1857 the city coat of arms was shaped in the following way: the board with the image of a scepter and the crossed marine and river anchors is topped by an imperial crown with azure tapes; behind a board two crossed scepters were located. The modern coat of arms of the city is similar to the first. On lattices of the Liteiniy Bridge the coat of arms of the city is held by the sea nymphs. There are only 546 coats of arms of the city.
Music of a hymn of St. Petersburg was taken from ballet «Copper horseman» created in 1949 by a composer Reinhold Glier.
The flag of St. Petersburg exists since 1860. The coat of arms of the city is represented on a red rectangular panel.
There are a lot of St. Petersburg emblems, but the main emblem of the city is Admiralty. The Admiralty ship-building shipyard has been founded in November, 1704 and was under construction of Peter I outline plan. The works of last reorganization of Admiralty directed by Andreyan Sakharov have begun in 1806 and have been finished in 1823.
The gold needle of Admiralty sparkles high in the sky, marking the historical and architectural center of St. Petersburg. And whatever the weather is like the Admiralty ship floats in the sky. This vane has become one of the main emblems of the city and protects the city.
