The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin
Ручина Валерия Александровна
I live in Nizhny Novgorod. It is one of the largest and oldest cities in Russia. It is situated on the banks of two great Russian rivers: the Volga and the Oka. It was founded in 1221 by Yury Vsevolodovich. My city is very beautiful. From 1932 to 1990, the city was named Gorky after the writer Maxim Gorky who was born here. The city is an important economic, transport and cultural center of the Russian Federation. There are some places which are loved by almost all residents of Nizhny Novgorod. My favorite place is the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. It is the historical centre of Nizhny Novgorod, the heart of the city and the place where the history of Nizhny Novgorod started. It is about 2 kilometers long.
The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin has 13 towers: 5 square towers that have the gates and 8 round ones. Their names are Dmitrovskaya, Kladovaya, Nikolskaya, Koromyslova, Taynitskaya, Severnaya, Chasovaya, Ivanovskaya, Belaya, Borisoglebskaya, Zachatskaya, Georgievskaya, and Porohovaya. Some towers of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin got their names from the churches situated near them, some after the legends that they related to. The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin Towers are from 18 to 30 meters high connected with huge walls (up to 5 meters wide) with merlons. The walls height is 12-22 meters.
Today the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin is the historical centre of Nizhny Novgorod and the location of the city and the region executive, the political centre. Inside the Kremlin walls there are the city authorities, the region governor administration, the region ministries, and the legislation authorities. The memorials, the cultural and religious sights (Art Gallery, Mikhaylo-Arkhangelsky Cathedral, Eternal Flame, and others) are located near them.
