The Kuzbass is called “the steel heart of Siberia” because today it is the second metallurgical base of Russia after the Urals. Kemerovo region is very rich in mineral resources. The most important of them are coal, iron ore, manganese, aluminum, precious metals and non-ferrous metals. The Kuzbass is an important industrial centre now. More than 100 million tons of coal are mined in the Kuzbass per year.

The nature of our region is beautiful. There are many forests, especially pine, birch and fir forests. One can often meet many wild animals, such as fox, brown bear, wolf, hare, lynx, beaver. Tourists spend much time exploring the splendid nature of our region. The administrative centre of Kemerovo region is Kemerovo. And the most interesting thing is that the minor planet 2140 Kemerovo discovered in 1970 by Soviet astronomer Tamara Mikhailovna Smirnova is named after Kemerovo Oblast. It’s a great honor!
