In the 9-th century Novgorod was one of the most important economic and cultural centers of Western Europe, it was a member of the Hanseatic League. It has strong links with the main cities of Russia: Moscow and St.Petersburg. The people of Novgorod take great care of the architectural and cultural monuments, the ancient churches and cathedrals, are proud of their famous ancestry and of the people who lived on this ancient land, such as: Miklukho-Maklai, Arenskiy, S.Rakhmaninov, A.Suvorov, N.Nekrasov, G.Uspenskiy and others.
Novgorod lies on both sides of the Volkhov which divides it into two parts: the Sophia Side and the Trade Side. The first is dominated by the Kremlin and the golden-domed Cathedral of St. Sophia. The Trade Side has the Yaroslavovo Dvorishche. It consists of a group of ancient churches. In old times the Kremlin was called the Detinets. The gem of the Kremlin is St. Sophia Cathedral.
In the centre of the Kremlin square stands the Millenium of Russia monument. It resembles the Monomakh hat. Above the orb one can see the figure of a kneeling woman in Russian national dress symbolizing Russia, and an angel blessing her.
The middle part of the monument is occupied by six sculpture groups: «Enlighteners», «State Figures», «Military Commanders and Heroes», and «Writers and Artists».
The Museum of Wooden Architecture in Vitoslavlitsi is a settlement of the ХII –ХVII crntures. Here one can see 7 churches, 4 houses, 2 wind mills, a barn and 3 chapels. The museum represents the bright and original peasant culture. It reflects all sides of life: handicrafts, trades, costumes, family life.
