Seven Icons of Ivanovo
Степанова Ольга Леонидовна
Ivanovo is situated in 300 kilometres to the north of Moscow. This year it is only 140 years old. My town has its own images that make it unique.
“Russian Manchester” was its first nickname in the beginning of the 19th century when Ivanovo became the powerful centre of textile industry.
Ivanovo chintz has become the brand of our town and has given another nickname to the town as the “Cotton Kingdom”.
The town has popularity as the “Cradle of the first Soviet”. In the course of a 72-day general strike of Ivanovo-Voznesensk workers in 1905, the first all-city Soviet of workers’ deputies was created.
The humorous brand the “City of Brides” appeared in the 20th century. Those were the words from a well-known song performed by Andrej Mironov. It was a story of a young man who fell in love with an Ivanovo beauty.
Ivanovo can be called the “Town – Monument” as it is included in the “Golden Ring”, the famous tourist route along ancient Russian towns and cities. The main architectural attractions of Ivanovo are its churches, temples and monasteries.
Ivanovo is gradually becoming a “Territory of Culture”, for more and more events take their place in it. Among them are Tarkovskiy film festival and the Textile Salon.
My town can be also called the “Land of Talents” as it is the birthplace of many well-known people. Among them are: Andrey Tarkovskiy, a producer and a film director; Marina Tsvetaeva, a famous Russian poetess; a well- known couturier Vyacheslav Zaitsev and many others.
Nowadays Ivanovo is the finalist of European towns contest and is worth being called the “European Youth Capital 2014”.
