Peterhof – the capital of fountains
Many people call Peterhof “Russian Versailles”, “the northern Venice” or “the capital of fountains”. The fountains are simple and complex, small and grand, funny and magnificent. The principles of water supply found by Peter I operate up to now. The water-spending system was created by Russian master V.Tuvolkov in the 18-th century. Each fountain has its own history. Fountain Samson, for example, was named for the Biblical story of Samson opening the lion’s mouth. The metaphor was chosen to symbolize the victory of Russia over Sweden in the Great Northern War. The lion, a symbol of Sweden, shoots a 20-meter high water jet from its mouth. That great battle was won on St. Samson's Day. The original statue, created by M. Kozlovsky, was taken by the Germans during the Second World War. It was replaced by a replica in 1947. The Grand Cascade waterfall and all the water fountains it comprises run with no pumps. Natural springs provide the water, which is collected in the Upper Gardens. Gravity pulls the water over the Grand Cascade and the other Lower Gardens fountains.
