Susanino is a small village in Gatchina district. First settlement was called Molvitino. In 1928 the village became a district center Molvitino, and in 1939 renamed the Susanino. The settlement was renamed in the honor of national hero Ivan Susanin. In 1971, Susanino was given the status of the urban settlement. The main attraction of the village is a Resurrection Church of the XVII century. Nowadays there is a museum in the church.
The legend of Susanin
According to the legend, Ivan Osipovich Susanin was recruited by a detachment of troops the Germans, the winter 1612 – 1613 as a guide to Kostroma. Susanin made the enemy in a swampy forest; he was killed for refusing to provide the correct way.
Now a population of Susanino is about 3700 residents. Many of them have domestic animals: cows, goats, geese and sheep. You can see them walking across the field.
Every year inhabitants also grow potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes and much more. Also in the village there is a local school and kindergarten. Pupils come to school from other villages and from Susanino too.
