Nizhegorodski Region has a long history rich in facts, events, names of people, and myths and legends closely connected with them. I’d like to tell about the most interesting. Svetloyar.
Everybody in Nizhegorodsky Region knows this place. Many, many years ago there was a town called Kitezh in this place. It had many churches and was very beautiful. One day enemies wanted to conquer the town and would make slaves out of the citizens. But these citizens were brave, courageous people, who began their struggle against Khan Batyi. All men were killed and women had to fight with the Khan Batyi’s people. Nobody left alive among the citizens. With great joy enemies rushed into the city. Suddenly something magic happened. While the bells on the church were ringing, the town was sinking and filling with water. The enemies were shocked and frightened. Water filled the pit and hid the town forever under its waves. In panic the enemies rushed out the town. Nowadays you can hear the bells ringing at a dawn.
The Yoke Tower.
Tartar enemies wanted to conquer Nizhny Novgorod. They had spent 3 days under the walls of the city. Russian people were afraid of them and nobody left the city. In Nizhny Novgorod there lived a beautiful girl. Nobody remembers her name. She had to take water from the Pochaina river. She took her baskets and hang them on iron yokes and left the city alone. The Tatars noticed her near the tower and rushed to her. The girl began to struggle with the help of her yokes. She killed many people. But there were a lot of enemies and they managed to win the girl. Her body was cut into small pieces. After the accident Tatar knights thought: “If Russian women are so brave, what we should do with the Russian soldiers”. They were frightened and left the city. Now one of the Towers in the Kremlin has the name of The Yoke Tower.
