Kemerovo is located in the southern part of Western Siberia. The city is situated on the banks of the river Tom. It occupies an area of 282 square kilometers. The present population of the city is about 520 000 people.
It was founded in 1918.The history of the city is closely connected with the discovery of coal on its territory. In 1721 Mikhailo Volkov found coal on the bank of the river Tom. The first coal mines were established in 1907 and then other mines and factories were built. In 1927 the city became an important industrial centre of Siberia. First the city was called Shcheglovsk but then it was renamed into Kemerovo, because the word “Kemerovo” means “coal” in aboriginal language, so it describes the mineral resources of the area.
Today Kemerovo is the capital of Kuzbass. It is a nice and modern city with a lot of parks, picturesque streets and historical monuments. We have a lot of modern cinemas, theatres, museums, a circus and Philharmonic Society. Everyone can find the place of his or her interests.
Our city is one of the largest Siberian educational centres. Thousands of students are trained in higher educational and technical schools. Among the well-known high schools are the State University, the State Technical University, the State University of Culture and Art and others.
Kemerovo is a big industrial city. There are many chemical plants and mines in it. Their products are exported to all economic regions of the country and also to foreign countries.
