I am glad to welcome you on Neva riversides. The Northern capital of Russia is known for its priceless monuments and culture, and unique architectural ensembles, some of which are full of secrets or mysterious.
The Michael’s Castle or the Engineers Castle is a former royal residence in the historic centre of Saint Petersburg. It was built in 1797-1800, as a residence for Emperor Paul I by architectures Vincezo Brenna and Vasili Bazhenov. Paul believed that the moats surrounding the castle and draw-bridges would be reliable protection against conspiracies budding at court. This palace is the only building in Russia that was made in romantic classicism style. The Michael’s Castle looks very austere and mysterious. Each side of the castle has its own unique facade. “Poor Paul I” lived there only for 40 days. Despite precautions, Paul was assassinated in his own bedroom on March 11, 1801. The building was empty until it was occupied by Engineering College which gave the castle a new name. The Michael’s Castle was the last of the imperial residences, built in St. Petersburg. Today the former Michael’s Castle houses the branch of the Russian Museum.
