I live in Moscow, but last Summer I was in Saint Petersburg for the first time in my life. Saint Petersburg is home to more than two hundred museums, but St Isaac’s Cathedral made the most great impression on me. St Isaac’s Cathedral is a unique phenomenon of Russian architecture.
It was built between 1818 and 1858, by the French-born architect Auguste Montferrand, to be one of the most impressive landmarks of the Russian Imperial capital.
St Isaac’s Cathedral is one of the largest domed buildings in the world. It is 101.5 meters high, it’s square is over one hectare /2.5 acres/. One hundred and eighty years later the gilded dome of St. Isaac's still dominates the skyline of St. Petersburg.
It is remarkable for the perfect harmony of architecture, painting, sculpture and mosaics. It is particularly notable for the splendour and variety of material used for it’s construction and adornment. The cathedral's facades are decorated with sculptures and massive granite columns (made of single pieces of red granite), while the interior is adorned with incredibly detailed mosaic icons, paintings and columns made of malachite and lapis lazuli. A large, brightly colored stained glass window of the "Resurrected Christ" takes pride of place inside the main altar. 400 kilograms of gold and 1,000 tonze of bronze were spent for the decoration of the Cathedral, 16,000 kilograms of malachite and more than eleven square metres of lazurite were used for the facing of columns and architectural details.
This majestic edifice still sums up the achievements in building techniques, architecture and various branches of decorative art in Russia during the first half of the nineteenth century.
I really loved Saint Petersburg and would like to visit this city again and again!
