Saint-Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It was founded by Peter the Great in 1703. The start of Saint-Petersburg is the Peter and Paul’s fortress.
The fortress was built on the place of a small wooden church in the centre of the city. Saint-Petersburg was the capital of Russia from 1712 till 1918. In 1918 Moscow became the capital of Russia and is the capital now. The population of the city is about 5 million people. Saint-Petersburg is situated on the Neva river. The city is often called the Venice of the North because in Saint-Petersburg there are a lot of rivers.
Saint-Petersburg is an industrial and cultural centre of Russia. Old architectural buildings are preserved to the present day. One of the first buildings of Saint-Petersburg was Peter the Great’s Cottage. The cottage was built at the end of May 1703. Now one of the popular museums is located in this building. Saint-Petersburg has many different museums and theatres. There are over 80 museums and more than 20 theatres. The Hermitage is the most important artistic museum in Russia. People from all over the world visit Saint-Petersburg and go to this museum. The Hermitage houses masterpieces of the outstanding artists: Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Raphael and other. The streets in Saint-Petersburg are very beautiful. The main street is Nevsky Avenue.
Different famous small shops, restaurants, hotels are situated on it. Saint-Petersburg is the city of my heart!
