My native town is Gadzhievo. It isn’t well-known town because it’s the Military Base of the Russian North Fleet on the seaside of Barencev sea. Its population is more than 10 thousand people. Strong and fearless people live here – the submariners and their families.
Gadzhievo is a closed town in Murmansk district. The town was also known as Yagelnaya Guba, Skalisty. In 1999 the town was renamed back to Gadzhiyevo. This name was given in honor of Magomet Gadzhiyev.
Magomet Gadzhiyev was a Soviet Navy submarine commander and Hero of the Soviet Union. His command sank 10 German transports in 1942. Magomet Gadzhiyev fought and died during World War II.
The climate is rather mild due to the Gulf Stream. The temperature drops to 20C below zero in winter and can reach 15C in summer. If you come to Gadzhievo in winter you will find the town in the darkness because of the polar night. It is the time when there is no sun in the sky. It will be unforgettable if you see the Northern Lights. In summer the sun shines the whole day – it is called the polar day.
The North is different to everyone! But I’m sure you won’t forget your visit!
