Yekaterinburg was founded as a factory fortress on the river Iset in 1723. It was named in honor of the empress Catherine I because of her order. The place for the plant was chosen by Tatishchev. The first plant was built under the direction of De Gennin.
From the end of XIX to the beginning of XX centuries the town was one of the centers of revolutionary movement in the Urals. The Soviet power was established in November in 1917.
The former Russian emperor Nikolai II with his family were shot in this city in July 1918, in Ipatev’s house (now on this place the Temple-on-blood is constructed).
In the Soviet years the town had been renamed into Sverdlovsk in honor of Jacob Sverdlov, the revolutionary figure of Communist party. Sverdlovsk became one of the most developed cities in the USSR.It was included some factories-giants as Uralmash, Elmash, Uralhimmash and others.
In the period of the Great Patriotic war there was another major transformation of the industry of the city. In Sverdlovsk were evacuated more than 50 large enterprises.
Reorganization and transition to market economy were negatively reflected in many spheres of life of the city. Manufacture at the industrial enterprises was reduced, especially in the factories-giants. Since 1991 the television tower has been thrown, the underground was tightened, all city was captivated by the chaotic trade.
The economic situation began to improve by the end of 1990th years. In 1997 the. A number of new hotels were constructed such as: Atrium Palace Hotel is the first five-stars hotel in the Urals. Now Yekaterinburg is the largest center of Russia. It takes the third place in the country, conceding only to Moscow and St.-Petersburg.
