Park Mon Repos appeared and developed in the second part of the 18th century. The park was given the name of Mon Repos (‘my rest’in French). The most famous owner of the park and the estate was Baron A.L. Nicolai. Mon Repos was owned by three generations of the family of Nicolai.
The most interesting part of the park is located between the cliffs and the coast of the gulf. The park has a formal garden and elements of a classical English park. The family of Nicolai was very proud of their art gallery. It consisted of paintings of Western - European and Russian artists of the 18th and 19th centuries. The library was situated in a special house next to the main building. The books for the library were collected by A.L. Nicolai and F. Lafermer. The collection contained 9000 books and was called «The library of two friends». Later the books were given to the Helsinki University.
The park was opened for citizens. The entrance was not for free and the money was given to charity. This tradition was maintained until 1930. Many famous people visited Mon Repos at different times: K. Batushkov, E. Baratynski, A. Delvig, A. Kern, a composer M. I. Glinka and others. All of them claimed that the park surpassed everything they had seen before.
