I’d like to tell you about a wonderful place on the bank of the great Russian river Volga, where I come back from time to time. This is one of the best recreation places of our country. It is Yurino, a small settlement, surrounded by dense Mari El forests.
Yurino attracts many tourists by its main place of interest. It is Sheremetev’s Castle. Magnificent castle is situated on the bank of the Volga, with its main façade looking towards the river. Jagged towers and turrets, balconies, terraces, the black and red brick window openings combined with white columns and semicolumns create a unique decorative façade.
Count Basil Sheremetev a founder of the castle was a grand-nephew of the outstanding Field Marshal Boris Petrovich Sheremetev. The construction of the castle was built in 1874. In 1916 the son of Basil Sheremetev died. He was the last owner of the castle. Some years ago people of the settlement were stirred by a striking news. When laying the pipeline the workers found the remains in a cemetery near the castle. The identification procedure proved them to belong to the count’s family. One of the descendants of the family, living abroad, visited Yurino and participated in the ceremony of reburial of the remains.
At the present time the castle is restored. Now we can see a hotel and a restaurant here. Guides conduct the tourists round and inside the castle. The castle is surrounded by a park with huge old pines .Their scent mixes with the scent of meadow flowers and grass. Russian and foreign tourists like to rest here enjoying this curative scent. These places are reflected in the works by famous writers and artists.
