Tomsk is an old Siberian city. It is situated on the right bank of the river Tom. It is surrounded by fine forests of pine, birch and fir trees. Tomsk was founded in 1604. It was a merchant town and place of exile. At the beginning of the 18-th century Tomsk became an administrative and commercial centre of Siberia. In 1888 Tomsk University, the first in Siberia was opened and Tomsk became a centre of education and culture in Siberia. It was often called “Siberian Athens”. Now Tomsk is known as a great educational, scientific, cultural and industrial centre. Production of Tomsk plants and factories is known not only in our country but abroad. Unlike many cities in Siberia which have been influenced by the industrialism of the twentieth century, Tomsk has preserved its own face. Nowadays, one of the main attractions of Tomsk is its wooden and stone architecture of the past, which is carefully kept and represents a very special and unique local style which contributes to the city’s identity. Tomsk architectural appearance today presents the combination of old and modern design, which gives a special attraction to the city.
The well-known emblem of Tomsk is a silver horse on the green background with a golden crown. It was made in 1804. The life at that moment was very difficult in Siberia; the roads were awful and very long. There were no cars, buses or trams there. Only horses, the great helpers of people. Life without them was impossible. And the horse became the symbol of the town.
