My native town, Yoshkar-Ola, the official capital of the Mari El Republic, is located in the heart of the country, stretching along both banks of the Kokshaga River. It was founded in 1584 and initially was called Zar’s town on the Kokshaga and only in 1928 it got its modern name Yoshkar-Ola, which means the Red Town in the Mari language. The territory of the modern town is about 102 square km and the population is about 248 000 people. Yoshkar-Ola has a host of fabulous attractions. There are three theatres: Mari State National Opera and Ballet Theatre named after M. Shketan, the Puppet theatre, Russian Drama Theatre named after G. Konstantinov, offering excellent shows. One can visit our National museum of Local Antiquities and a great number of Orthodox churches, the activity sport centers and outdoor attractions, a cenotaph with eternal flame, monuments to famous people and historical events.
With plenty of markets, local stores, exclusive bars, vibrant cookery schools and excellent restaurants and cafes, Yoshkar-Ola offers a great range of eating and drinking experiences. Combining the bustle of the town, the beauty of the river bank and the tranquility of the countryside, Yoshkar-Ola offers wonderful variety combining history, culture and adventure.
