WELCOME TO PAVLOVO
Have you ever seen the PAZ buses in the streets of your city? If you have, I want to tell you more about my native town Pavlovo above the Oka river, picturesquely situated on seven hills. Locks and keys, knives and forks from Pavlovo were well known around the whole Russia, and even in foreign markets.. Now Pavlovo is proud of its buses and other industries. You can see Pavlovo buses all over Russia and outside of it.
The history of Pavlovo began in the middle of the 16th century. It was mentioned for the first time by Ivan the Terrible in 1566. A fort was founded at the bend of the Oka. Ivan ordered guards (“Streltsy”) to live inside the fortress and protect the merchants who travelled down to Nizhny Novgorod, from Tatars and Mordovian invaders.
One of the legends tells us about the origin of the name of the town. It was named after the first Ferryman, Pavel. The symbol of the town reminds us about him. It is a ferryboat (“ladia”).
You can get acquainted with the skills of Pavlovo in the local regional museum. There are thousands of examples here. There is a tiny lock that weighs only 0.7 grams, and the Czar lock that weighs 50 kilos.
One of the most famous things about Pavlovo is the citrus trees grown indoors. There are lemons, mandarins grown in pots on the windowsills of houses, apartments and offices. Visitors to the town are very surprised to see such trees bearing fruit. They ask where these trees came from. About a hundred years ago one of the merchants brought seedlings from Turkey. One of his relatives was so interested in those trees that he wanted to breed them here. He was a success. In five years the seedlings came into blossom and were wonderfully and heavily scented. Following the blossoming , they bore fruit. Since that time they have become very popular around the town. There is a monument to the lemon in Pavlovo.
