Not far from the ancient town of Alexandrov there is the Karinskoye Lake. A lot of myths and legends are connected with it. One of them says that its name deals with the Russian word “kara” which means “punishment”.
In the 16th century in the times of oprichnina many people were sunk in the Karinskoye Lake. They were tied and put on special cane rafts, which were pulled away in the middle of the lake and left there. The raft got wet under the bodies’ weight and the poor people either died or had to concede to the oprichniks.
But nowadays the famous historical festival “Devoted Sons of Our Fatherland” is held in the field near the lake every summer. It is devoted to the battle between the Russian Prince Skopin-Shuisky and the Polish- Lithuanian troops. Many guests from different regions come to take part in it. They represent different patriotic clubs, folk groups from Nizhny Novgorod, Moscow, Yaroslavl, Kazan and some other cities. The participants watch a very interesting performance and then they can try their strength in shooting arrows or crossing swords. They can also make wonderful photos in chain armours and helmets. There are many other interesting competitions and contests where the guests can amuse themselves. In the conclusion of the festival thankful descendants lay flowers and wreaths on a symbolic place to honour the memory of their great ancestors.
I think it is very important to hold such festivals in the cities and towns which have rich historical past. It helps the young generation to know the price of their lives and to be proud of the country where they live.
