I would like to tell you about my favourite place in Saint- Petersburg. It is Palace Square which is in the heart of the city. Here you can see the oldest and largest structure ,the Winter Palace. It was built in Baroque style and designed by the famous Italian architect, Bartolomeo Rastrelli, between 1754-1762. It is the green building situated closest to the Neva. Nowadays it is one of the most popular museums in Russia which has a lot of paintings, sculptures and other pieces of art. Many tourists visit this Palace every year.
Opposite the Winter Palace there is a long, yellow building designed in 1829 by the Italian architect Carlo Rossi. It served as General Staff Headquarters of the armed forces for many years. It is the longest building in Europe (610 meters). The building is decorated with a beautiful triumphal arch.
In the middle of the square there is a perfect granite column which is called the Alexander Column. It was designed by Auguste de Montferrand and the column celebrates the victory over Napoleon. The one-piece 600 ton column has no support to help keep it upright. At the top of the column there is an angel with a cross.
I think that Palace Square is the most beautiful and most frequently visited square in all the city. I like my city and there are lots of wonderful places in it, but if I have time I go to Palace Square and spend some time there with my family or friends.
