Novokuznetsk is the largest city of Kemerovo region. It is situated on the banks of the Tom river. The present population of the city is 576 000 people. The area is 424,3 square km. It’s one of the oldest cities in Siberia, its history dates back to 1618 when a fortified settlement Kuznetsk ostrog was founded. It was named after the main occupation of the aborigines, iron melting. In the 17th century Kuznetsk became a military and administrative centre of a vast territory and in 1622 it received its own coat of arms. The upper part of a heraldic shield presents a white horse on a green background; the lower one presents a smithy on a yellow background. In 1932 Kuznetsk iron-and-steel works was put into operation and the industrial city was renamed Stalinsk. During the Great Patriotic War thousands of Stalinsk citizens fought at the war fronts defending Russia and on the home front, producing armour for tanks and artillery, steel for planes and shells. The city was awarded with the Order of Red Banner of Labour (1971) and with the Order of October Revolution (1981) for the advances in the development of ferrous metal industry and for the contribution to the defeat of fascist invaders. There are many places of interest in Novokuznetsk, such as Kuznetsk Fortress, the House of Dostoevsky, Boulevard of the Heroes, the Drama Theatre and monuments to famous people. The oldest historical monument Kuznetsk Fortress was built to protect the boundaries from enemies and is an outstanding example of Siberian military art of the 19th century. Nowadays it’s a museum with more than 8000 items in collection. The world famous writer F.M. Dostoevsky visited his darling M. Isaeva in Novokuznetsk three times and spent 22 days here and they got married in 1857. We are proud of our native city! Here we live, our ancestors lived and our descendents will live!
