Hi! My name is Maria Kapralova. I study in the 6th form. I was born in Moscow and I want to tell you about St Basil’s Cathedral. Moscow is the capital of Russia and it is a very beautiful city. There are a lot of sights here. Two of the most well-known are the Kremlin and St. Basil’s Cathedral.
St. Basil’s Cathedral is a monument which is situated in Red Square. It was built in 1555-1561 by the order of Ivan the Terrible. It is one of the most famous places in Moscow.
It is also a museum. Since 1918 St. Basil's Cathedral has been one of the most important monuments of culture. In 1923 it was decided to turn it into a historical and architectural museum. In 1928 the Museum "Pokrovsky Cathedral" became a branch of the State Historical Museum. There are 2 floors with many rooms, 9 churches and a belfry. It has 11 domes.
I also found an interesting fact about the builders of this monument. Some people think that two people worked at it. Their names were Barma and Faster Yakovlev. Others think that there was only one builder whose name was Ivan Yakovlevich Barma nicknamed the Faster. I think that two people built such a great monument because it is difficult for one person to do it! And here is some information about St. Basil. St. Basil was a Moscow holy fool (believed to possess the gift of prophecy), he died in 1551 and his day is celebrated on August 2.
I think it is the first place in Moscow that people should visit.
