My name is Veronika and I live in one of the most beautiful cities in our country. Saint Petersburg is on the north-west of Russia. Thousands of visitors come to our city every year to enjoy its wonderful places of interest.
I would like to tell you about my favourite place. It is Kazan Cathedral which is located in Nevsky Prospekt. It took ten years to build the cathedral (1801-1811). The architect was Andrej Voronikhin. Later he became the professor in the Academy of Art.
Kazan Cathedral has an impressive stone colonnade which encircles a small garden. There is a fountain in the centre of it. The design of the cathedral resembles the Basilica of St. Peter’s in Rome. The best sculptors and artists decorated the cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan. They were V. Borovikovsky, O. Kiprensky, A. Ivanov and others.
Kazan Cathedral is a memorial to the heroes of the Patriotic War of 1812. The statues to the famous Field Marshals Mikhail Kutuzov and M. A. Barclay de Tolly were put up in front of the cathedral in 1837 ( sculptor B. Orlovsky).
The divine service renewed in the cathedral on 4th November 1990 after more than a 70-year break.
