Town of Apatity is situated in the foothills of the Khibiny. The Khibiny Mountains, rocky and treeless, located north of 67th parallel, beyond the Arctic Circle. This is the highest mountain range in the Kola Peninsula, the flat top of which rises to 800-900 meters above the surrounding hilly plain.
The features of regional and local mountain climate are combined there. In some areas of the Khibiny Mountains snow does not melt until late summer, while it remains white. Until the mid-summer the mountains shine their snow clothes on a background of green grass and forest. Snow here lies from October to June. The polar night lasts 42 days.
The flora of Khibiny is very valuable. On the territory of the array we can find a large number of species included in the "red book" of different rank. The fauna of the Khibiny massif is represented by 27 species of mammals, 123 species of birds, 2 species of reptiles, 1 species of amphibians. Here are almost all mammals of Murmansk region. Some of them are classified as protected or endangered. The Khibiny massif contains the largest deposits of apatite-nepheline ores.
The summit of the Khibiny is called Yudychvumchorr (1200 m above sea level) which is the highest point of the peninsula. In the Khibiny there are many mysterious places attracting researchers like a magnet. There are ice caves to get to one can only in late autumn, and there are abandoned tunnels developed back in the 30s of the last century.
If a mountain fan comes to Khibiny, most likely, he would like to stay here forever.
