I would like to tell you about one of the most famous Russian monuments - The Saint Basil's Cathedral and the Statue of Minin and Pozharsky. The Saint Basil's Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox church. It was build on the order of Ivan the Terrible on the Red Square in 1561 to celebrate the 1552 capture of Kazan from Mongol forces. It was the tallest building in Moscow also marked a geometric center of the city. The Saint Basil's Cathedral looks like no other buildings in Russian architecture. Nothing is known about the builders except their names (Barma and Postnik Yakovlevs) and the doubtful legend that Ivan had them blinded so they could not create anything to compare. The Cathedral is representing the medieval symbol of eight-pointed star – eight churches are standing around a central ninth.
The Cathedral is now a museum. You need to use wooden spiral stairs to enter the central church, with its extraordinary roof and fine iconostasis. You can also walk along the narrow winding gallery covered with beautiful patterned paintwork.
Near the Cathedral ther is another monument This famous statue commemorates Prince Dmitry Pozharsky and the butcher Kuzma Minin, the leaders of the militia that repelled the Polish invasion of 1612, at the height of the Time of Troubles. Designed by the architect I. Martos, it was erected in 1818 and became Russia's first monumental sculpture. One of the bas-reliefs shows the people of Novogorod bringing their sons to be armed - Minin famously forced the city to provide funds and fighting men by holding their womenfolk hostage. The other shows the Poles fleeing from the Kremlin, pursued by Russian troops. The pediment is inscribed with the words: "To Citizen Minin and Prince Pozharsky, from a grateful Russia". Last October I was on the Red Square with my groupmates and took this photos. Looking forward to visit this place again.
