My name is Dmitry V. Rezvan.
I live in Rostov-on-Don.
I'm 15 years old.
And I would like to talk about interesting and ancient site such as the Tanais.
Tanais is the ancient name for the River Don in Russia. Strabo regarded it as the boundary between Europe and Asia. The first attempt to find Tanais was made by archaeologist, Stempkovsky, who was at the time a colonel in the Russian Army. He visited the Don Mouth in 1825.
Tanais was built in the III Century B.C. by the Greeks of Bospor Kingdom on the high bank of the Myortvy Donets. The population of Tanais was mixed and consisted of Greeks, Scythians , Sarmats and Meots. The city was refounded around the 13th century by the Venetians. Later it was acquired by the maritime Republic of Genoa, of which it was an important place for tradings with the Golden Horde. It decayed against after 1368. In 1392 it was conquered by Timur, by the Ottoman Turks in 1471, by the Russians in 1696, again by the Turks in 1711 and by the Russian Empire in 1771. Ancient authors often interchangeably called Tanais (Girgisom) the Don River, the Seversky Donets. The ancient Greek geographer Ptolemy gave coordinates of the source and the mouth of the Tanais, which is exactly the Seversky Donets, driven by the lower course of the current Don to the Sea of Azov, thus Girgis (Don), it was considered a tributary located closer to the then civilized world Tanais (Northern Donets)
At the mouth of the river Tanais (the Seversky Donets River), near its confluence with the sea of Azov, in what was then the main river channel, two millennia later, called Dead Donets, and was founded by the Greek colony of Tanais. In 1955 an expedition under the supervision of D. Shelov was organized by the Institute of Archaeology of the USSR Academy of Sciences, the Rostov Museum of Regional Study and Rostov University.
Four years later excavated burial mound, and have been declared protected area. And in 1961, was opened one of Russia's first archaeological museum, an area of more than 3 hectares. C 1973 to 2002, the permanent museum director was VF garlic. Then the director for a short time was a former Deputy Minister of Culture of the Rostov region Vladimir Kasyanov. In 2005 he was appointed director of the VA Carriers.
