Arbat is by right called the main street of Moscow. The most famous resident of Arbat was, of course, Alexander Pushkin. Pushkin’s apartment is located in one of the oldest buildings of Arbat, Khitrovo houses. Built in the middle of the 18th century it has since been repeatedly rebuilt. There, Alexander brought his young wife Natalya Nikolaevna (née Goncharova), after their wedding on February 18, 1831. The newly-weds settled down in a small two-storeyed house where Pushkin rented the rooms upstairs for six months. According to the poet’s confession, he was absolutely happy and did not write a single line. However, in mid-May 1831 Alexander was forced to leave the apartment in Arbat and move with his wife to St. Petersburg trying to hide from the ill-disposed Moscow high society.
Historians always kept it in mind that the house in Arbat was associated with Pushkin’s happiest period of life but the house became a museum only in the 1970s. Soon after the revolution of 1917 the building was turned over to the Red Army theatre. This added new pages to its history because the theatre producer Vsevolod Meyerhold and the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky used to visit it.
After the theatre moved to another place, the house became an ordinary shared lodging. In February 1937, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Pushkin’s death, house number 53 received the memorial plaque reminding of the great tenant. It was in a neglected condition when it was given to the museum. While reconstruction was going on, the museum staff found a priceless document, an old realtor book containing an agreement on renting the Arbat flat signed by Pushkin’s hand. In 1986 the Pushkin's Memorial Apartment Museum in Arbat was opened.
