St.Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. This is the city decorated with wonderful architectural ensembles. In the beginning of the 19th century, the Stock Exchange building was built on the Spit of Basil’s Island, as well as the two Rostral columns. The Rostral columns are called so because they are decorated with rostra, or prows of war galleys. In ancient Rome, there was a tradition to cut off the prows of enemy ships after a victory and fasten them with nails to triumphal columns. Ships were made of wood, and their prows were decorated with sculptures. Architect Thomas de Thomon, who designed the Stock Exchange, erected two lighthouses in front of the building in the form of Rostral columns. There are four statues at the base of the Rostral columns. These are allegorical images of great Russian rivers: the Volga and the Dnieper, the Neva and Volkhov.
On holidays gas-torches are lighted on top of the Rostral columns. It is very beautiful!
