When I moved to St. Petersburg I was greatly impressed by the numerous places of interest. But one monument impressed me most of all. It was the monument to the outstanding Russian writer Ivan Krylov.
It was designed by Peter Сlodt in 1853 and it was his last large project. After the long discussions the Summer Gardens were chosen as a place for the monument as it was the favorutite place of Krylov in our city.
The pedestal of the monument is decorated with bas-reliefs representing the most famous characters of fables written by Krylov. When I was a child it was so exciting to walk around the monument and examine the bronze animals, remembering my favourite fables! They are shown very naturally, having their characters and representing the sins of people.
As you know, Clodt was a very responsible person. When he decided to decorate Krylovs monument with fables` characters he read all of them and made the list of animals from those fables. I should mention that Clodt prefered sculpting using real models. So there is a legend that while working on this monument he used a lot of animals as models. For example there was a cat, a wolf, dogs, foxes, a monkey, a donkey, a frog, sheep and even a crane! The monument to Krylov is interesting to both adults and children, as when we examine it again and again we can find some new details which had not been noticed earlier. Also this monument remind me my childhood. That time was so incredible!
