Kolomna has always been known for its churches and monasteries. There are more than 20 of them here. And each has a wonderful story to tell. The brick church in the name of Saint Great Martyr Nikita was once well-known in Kolomna. It was built not far from the Kremlin in 1695 and became a part of "Kolomensky Posad". Originally it was a home church for the rich merchant family of old Kolomna - the Meshchaninovs. Demid Meshchaninov is said to be the person who started it.
In the 18th and 19th centuries the building underwent some changes. The style of Moscow baroque gave way to the ampere. Now St. Nikita’s Church is one-domed, in the shape of a high two-sided quadrangle covered with a closed vault. The walls and the vault of the church have some renovated murals of the 1830. Like any other old building it has its legends and mysteries.
An interesting story was told in the 19th century by the Dean’s son Nikita Petrovich Giliarov-Platonov, who later became a famous Russian theologian and publicist. Ivan Timofeevich Meshchaninov decided to get a thousand pounds bell in his church. He went to the bishop and asked for a blessing. But the bishop was against, because parish churches were allowed to have only a hundred pounds bells. He told the merchant to leave the newly-cast bell for the Assumption Cathedral and to make a smaller one for his church. So it was done, but the bell seemed to have got offended. It wouldn’t go through Piatnitskiye Gates of the Kremlin. It was so “stubborn” that the craftsman had to whip it on the way.
Unfortunately at present the church does not look what it used to be. It needs financial support of new “Meshchaninovs” to restore its beauty and elegance and to delight the eye of the visitors.
