I like the Grand Cascade with its golden statues. Petersburgers , like me, especially love the sculpture group called «Samson Tearing Apart the Jaws of Lion». This is the highest fountain in Peterhof. The water rises up out of it for nearly 21 meters.
Samson was a lion on the banner of the Swedish king Karl XII, whom Peter the Great defeated at Poltava. The Battle of Poltava was won on July 22, 1709, on the day of Saint Samson Strannopriimets. This saint certainly didn’t fight any lions, but he is named after the Biblical character of Samson, who tore apart the jaws of a lion with his bare hands.
So the fountain was made to commemorate the Russian victory at Poltava. After that victory, Peter was compared to Samson by a preacher and teacher, Pheophan Prokopovich, for the first time. But the figure of the powerful giant Samson you see today is the third one.
I advise to you come to Peterhof and look for the Samson. It is so beautiful especially in summer!
