My name is Mary Malyshenko. I am 14 years old. I like reading books, painting and dancing. Taganrog is my native town. I was born and have lived all my life in it.
Taganrog is the city, which was founded by Peter the Great. It is a seaport on the Azov Sea. There is a great number of interesting museums in our town. I found Taganrog Museum of Art very interesting. One of its founder was Anton Chekhov, a renowned playwright and short-story writer. Though this museum was officially inaugurated in 1968 yet it was fully completed by the end of 19th century when the art department of the Taganrog's city museum was established.
The most important part of the museum collection was formed in the Soviet Union time, and features two departments- Russian art before the Russian Revolution of 1917 and Soviet art. Tourists coming here can see several paintings and icons. The paintings date back to 18th and 19th centuries whereas the icons belong to 17th and 18th centuries. You can enjoy paintings of great artists such as Antropov, , Shishkin, Savrasov, Repin, Surikov and Aivazovsky. The museum also boasts of beautiful landscape paintings by Shedrin and Chernetsov. The Soviet art is represented with paintings by several generations of Soviet artists, including Garber, Gerasimov, Krymov, Stozharov; sculptures by Vuchetich, Maize; graphic art by Favorskiy, Neprintsev and Gorchakov.
Since 1975, the museum of art is located at the former mansion of merchant Anton Handrin. Nowadays there are more than 6000 exhibits of painting, graphic arts, sculpture, decorative art in this great museum.
So, I can say welcome to Taganrog and enjoy your visit to the Taganrog Museum of Art.
