We live in Balakovo. It is a beautiful town on the banks of the river Volga. There are a lot of interesting places in Balakovo. But we want to tell you about a luxurious mansion of an Old Believer merchant Paisy Maltsev (also known as Petrodvorets-on-Volga). Let’s go to the museum with us. It was constructed under the project of Saratov architect Shuster in 1880. But in 1912 it was reconstructed by the famous Moscow architect Schechtel. He gave a touch of romanticism and a capital lustre to a building. You can see masks over the windows. Attics are decorated with flowerpots with stylized flowers. Between the windows there are semi columns. Lion's heads are symmetrically placed across the main facade attic. And the attic itself is decorated by a round window-aperture and a canopy similar to a hat of a mushroom. Under this canopy you can see a staff of god Mercury, the patron of trade. Paisy Maltsev traded in grain and fat.
To the right of a front entrance you саn see entrance gate similar to a foundry iron lace. Solemn entrance gate was conceived by Schechtel in the form of a triumphal Roman arch. Let’s enter the building. The architect developed the plot for each room. The angular drawing room with a fireplace received a painted plafond of a ceiling; the walls were covered with modelled eaves and panels with a vegetative ornament. The study was decorated by a massive fireplace with sculptures of angels round a vase. For a dining room the hunting plot was chosen. Panels and a plafond in it were decorated with modelled ornaments in the form of fruits, game and hunting subjects. There are also Greek and East halls in the mansion.
There is a legend that Paisy Maltsev loved an Italian woman and wanted to bring her to Balakovo. That’s why he decorated his mansion. But she didn’t like a small, dusty and dirty town and didn’t want to live in it. But the monument built in her honour remained in Balakovo. Now it is a museum. You can visit it and get pleasure from beauty and grace of this building. Welcome to Balakovo.
