Kirov is a town, where I live. It is the administrative centre of Kirov. It was founded in 1374 and stretches for 25 km along the banks of the Vyatka River. It is one of the major railway points linking Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Kotlas, and Perm. The population of Kirov is about 500000 people. At different times our town was called Hlynov and Vyatka. Kirov is a scientific and cultural centre of the Volga Federal District of Russia. The main sightseeing sites of it are St. Trifon’s Monastery, an organ hall in Aleksandrovsky Catholic Church, literary house-museums of A.S.Green and M.Saltykov-Shchedrin, the Vasnetsov Regional Art Museum, the K.E. Tsiolkovsky Museum of Aviation and Cosmonautics, the Museum of Vyatka Folk Arts, a unique paleontological museum. The favorite places of relax in any season among the citizens are Gagarin park, Alexander park, Green’s quay, the Teatralnaya Square, the S.M. Kirov Park, the Botanical Garden.
Kirov is well known by handicrafts: Dymkovo toys, things made of straw, Kukarsky laces, and the Vyatka ceramics.
The well-known peoples in our days, whose Motherland is Kirov are Albert Likhanov – the writer and President of the International Association of Children's Fund. Viktor Petrovich Savinykh – Russian cosmonaut № 50, Alexander Serebrov - Russian cosmonaut № 100, Oksana Domnina - Russian ice dancer, Zhanna Agalakova – TV presenter.
