I live in Volgograd and I’m very proud of it. Volgograd is a hero-city with a lot of sights. I want to tell you about one of them. The museum “Old Sarepta” has been created in 1990. This historic-architectural complex is unique not only for Russia but also for the Europe – there aren’t similar architectural complexes in the world. The museum is situated 40 km from the centre of Volgograd and presents an architecturally-historical complex of German colonists of XVIII century.
In 1765 the first colony of European settlers was founded in the mouth of the river Sarpa. The basis of Sarepta settlement was made by brothers-gernguters. They were the descendants of the Czech and Moravian brothers who hid from the persecution of the Catholic Church. The first missionaries, who arrived from Germany to old Sarepta, were impressed by this district. That time it was the scotched steppe. The Germans built beautiful streets, planted gardens in front of each house, grew vineyards and melon fields, planted cereals. Scientists from this colony made great achievements in medicine, physics, and chemistry.
Nowadays this museum is large cultural, tourist, research and methodical centre of Volgograd. It includes 27 buildings, 23 of them are federal monuments of XVIII – XIX centuries. The museum “Old Sarepta” has a unique German library in the region, and perhaps in the whole country.
