My name is Diana Vasileva. I am 13 and I am in the 7th grade. I live in Saint-Petersburg. My favourite place in the city is the Kunstkamera. The word Kunstkamera comes from the German word:”kunst” means “art” and “kammer” means “a chamber” or “a room”. The Kunstkamera was the first Russian museum. This green and white dome-capped building was commissioned in 1718 by Peter I as the Academy of Art and Sciences. Ivan Mattarnovi started the building but it was completed by Mikhail Zemtsov only in 1734, after Peter`s death. The Kunstkamera is “the cradle of Russian science”. It was the seat of the Russian Academy of its foundation by Peter in 1724 up to the end of the end of the 18th century.
Peter`s collection of curiosities was placed here: Siamese-twins, infants, a two-faced calf and other oddities. Mikhail Lomonosov, a Russian encyclopedic scholar worked here from 1741 to 1765. The building houses the Memorial Museum in his honour. The first Russian astronomical observatory was installed in the tower; there still is a globe 3 metres, maps and astronomical instruments in the museum have been collected from the Peter times.
On our days off my family enjoy visiting, different museum. When we come to the Kunstkamera we also find unique example of pre-historic art, remains of Neanderthal man and skeletons of the Mesolithic Age there. What is more, there is an exhibition of life and culture of the people of Africa, Asia, Australia and America in this building, too.
The Kunstkamera is one of the most popular museums in Saint-Petersburg. It attracts both children and grown-ups as it gives them a chance to see the things which they can never see in their real life.
