The square is named after Kuibyshev. It is located inside the rectangle formed by the streets Chapayev, Vilonovskoy, and Galaktionovskaya Chervonoarmiiska. The territory of the square is 17.4 hectares. It's almost a hectare more than famous Moscow's Red Square, and on these parameters is the largest in Europe. In other cities there are four central squares which have larger size than this one in Samara - in Cairo, Havana, Beijing and Pyongyang.
There are four parks in the corners of the square so 8 hectares of its territory is covered with asphalt, 7 - with flowers and trees, and another 2.4 hectares is the Kyibyshev's Palace of Culture. The decision to locate Kuibyshev Square in the central part of the city was taken on March 17, 1935. At that time, this place was the Cathedral Square with the impressive cathedral, which was one of the biggest and most beautiful religious buildings in the Volga region. By decision of the City Council cathedral was blown up.
Kyibyshev Square is also famous by the fact that on November 7, 1941 one of two military parades, which could not afford the Soviet government in this harsh time took place there.Another significant event in the history of the central square of Samara is associated with a stay in our city of the USSR Council of Ministers Chairman Khrushchev. He arrived here on August 9, 1958 in connection with the ceremonial start of the Volga hydroelectric station in honour of Lenin.
Now all significant political and cultural events of our city take place on Kyibyshev Square.
