Amazing Lake Mogilnoe is located on Kildin island near the northern coast of the Kola Peninsula. The lake is composed of several layers - "floors", its depth is 17 meters. The first "floor" at the bottom of the lake, is almost lifeless, consisted of liquid mud and filled with hydrogen sulfide. The second "floor" has a cherry colour - purple bacterium give this colour to water. They work as a filter for hydrogen sulfide. The "third" floor is a "piece of the sea." It consists of normal sea water. This layer is filled with life. Jellyfishes, sea crabs, stars, sea anemones, sea bass, cod live there. The fourth "floor" is intermediate: the water is slightly salty. The fifth "floor" – is a six-meter layer of pure spring water suitable for drinking. Here live animals that are common for freshwater lakes. Lake Mogilnoe is one of the oldest. It has kept some species of living creatures that had been extinct in the nearby Barents Sea long ago. The Mogilnoe - is the only lake of this kind in the world. It is a nature monument on the Kola Peninsula.
