In Moscow at the beginning of the 20 century, the transport problem stood very sharply. By then in London, Paris, Berlin, New York, so-called “undergrounds” already operated. Then the First Word War, after that October revolution had broken out. Only in 1931 the decision on underground in Moscow was made.
“The underground is built by all country!” – this slagon was very popular. At that time, in the city of Mytischi cars of wagons were constructed, in Leningrad escalators were built, by the way, the longest in the world. Competition on the best design of the future underground stations was declared. Well know architects, sculptors and artists took part in this country all over the USSR. And then on May 15th, in 1935 at 7 o’clock in the morning, the first line of underground called “Sokolniki-Park Kultuty” was opened for passengers. It was a real public holiday for the whole country! The first train consisted of two cars only, then the number of cars became twice as much. At that time Moscow underground transported daily 180 thousand citizens.
Very often the Moscovites came to the underground not only to go somewhere but also to admire beautiful stations. They really reminded art museums and looked fantastic. Then The Great Patriotic War began, but the underground continued to work and protected Moscovites from air raids. A lot of stations became bombproof shelters for example, Mayakovskaya. It is really surprising that despite the War, the underground continued to be under construction. Thus, in 1944 appeared: Novokuznetskaya, Paveletskaya, Avtozavodskaya, Baumanskaya, Semenovskaya, Izmajlovsy park. In 1956 Moscow underground “started talking” and this meant that the names of stations were announced in trains.
