St. Petersburg is located in the northwest part of Russia on the banks of the River Neva. It is situated on about 33 islands, which are separated by channels. In 2011 the population of the city is about 4 850 000 people. St. Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Emperor Peter I. Its name St. Petersburg has received from Peter and Paul Fortress - the first buildings of the city. St. Petersburg was the capital of Russia in 1710. At the time of Empress Elizabeth, Paul I and Catherine II were built a lot of beautiful buildings: Palace Square and the Winter Palace, Anichkov Palace, St. Vladimir's, Isaac's and Kazan Cathedrals, the Temple of the Savior on the Blood and the famous statue of Peter I – “The Bronze Horseman”. The most beautiful sight is the Temple of the Savior on the Blood.
According to legend, the icon of the Ascension of Christ, which is in the Savior on the Blood, keeps the most important dates of Russian history:
1917 - the October Revolution,
1941 - the beginning of Second World War
1953 – the death of Stalin and others.
People say that you can see even the future of Russia there, but nobody could do it still. In 1970 they began the restoration of the church, which they wanted to turn into a museum of ceramics. Scaffoldings were built around the Savior on the Blood. In that time people said that the Soviet time would be finished as soon as the restoration would be finished. And this time was 1991. This was true.
