I am from a nice town Volzhsky. Volzhsky is situated on the left bank of the river Akhtuba. It is a very beautiful river. The length of the river is 537 and the width is 200-300 kilometers. Before the fifteenth century the name of the river was Sara. Sara is the Turkic word and it can be translated into Russian as yellow. It is difficult to find out why and when the river was renamed from Sara to Akhtuba.
There are several beautiful legends about the name Akhtuba. One of them is connected with the name of the Turkic princess Tuba, who threw herself into the river and sank in front of her father who cried “Ah, Tuba! Ah, Tuba!”. The name Akhtuba is also a Turkic word. But there are different meanings in the translation of this word. “Akh” means white, “tuba” means hill. So, Akhtuba is the river of white hills.
