The surname Shimanovsky has Polish origin, the suffix-ovsky indicates it. However in its basis there is the nickname “ shiman “which goes back to the word "syman" (fat), used in Turk languages: Tatar, Turkish, etc. Thus this surname contains descriptions of certain external features of a person. It is necessary to notice that fatness wasn't considered shameful in ancient times. On the contrary, it meant health and prosperity of a person. The town of Shimanovsk was founded in 1910 with the start of the Amur railway building. Then it was a small station Pyora by name, surrounded with deep forests. In 1913 the station was visited by the governor general N.A.Gondati. Shortly after that the station was named in his honor. But this name did not accustom.
In 1917 an engineer Vladimir Shimanovsky arrived and headed railway workshops here. Young and ambitious he actively supported the ideas of revolution, took part in formation of the Soviet power in the Amur area. But soon Shimanovsky was arrested and shot. In his memory a town was given a new name - Shimanovsk.
