My name is Anna. I’m finishing school this year and my dream is to become a lawyer. Now I’m fully absorbed into my driving lessons as I’m looking forward to getting my driving license and drive a car myself. I like travelling. This way I’ll be free to visit historic places of our region one of which is Azov.

The town is situated on the left bank of the river Don in the southern part of Rostov region 12.5 km from the Taganrog bay and 42 km from Rostov-on-Don. The population is 80 000 people. Azov is connected with Rostov-on-Don by the railway, automobile and river transport. It is an international sea port.
The history of Azov began more than 2 000 years ago when first strengthened settlements appeared on the Azov land. Officially the town was founded in 1067 and is one of the oldest cities of Russia. Its history is connected with the name of Peter I, who attached Azov to the Russian Empire. At the end of 12 century the Great Silk Way passed through it. In 13 century Tatar-Mongol town Azak appeared next to Azov. In the last quarter of 15 century Azov lands were captured by the Turks and they built a strong fortress on the site of these two towns.
The history of Azov is a very dramatic one. In the period of 1637-1642 it was the capital of the Don Cossacks. It passed from the Russians to the Turks many times until finally Azov became the part of Russia after the Russian-Turkish War in 1768-1774.
Now the town-fortress attracts tourists by its unique beauty and the monuments of architecture. Everything here calls back the memories of Azov Sitting, the struggle of Russia for the gate to the Azov and Black Seas, Peter I’s Azov voyages, which started the glory of the Russian Navy. The Natural History Museum hosts rich collections of ancient jewelry and armory of the Bronze and Middle Ages. The pride of the museum is the collection of the Sarmats belongings and ceramics of 14 century.
You can also admire the Paleontology collection, the greatest one in the south of Russia, and powder magazines of 1799. If you happen to come to the town in September take part in the exiting activities of the Day of the Town celebrations.
