Ivan Petrovich Pavlov, a well-known Russian scientist, was born in 1849 in Ryazan. His grandfather was a peasant and his father was a priest. As a son of a clergyman, Ivan was permitted to attend the local theological seminary, where his interest in science was encouraged, and in 1870 he was able to continue his studies at the University of St. Petersburg. During his entire career he worked on only three experimental problems. The first concerned the function of the nerves of the heart. He presented some of this work as his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Medicine, which he received in 1883. The second problem was the activity of the principal digestive glands. His brilliant experiments on digestion brought him world-wide recognition and earned him the 1904 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. He was the first Russian Nobel Prize Laureate. The third was his study, from 1902 until his death in 1936, of the functions of the higher nervous centres in the brain. His use of conditioning as a way to attack this problem remains his greatest scientific accomplishment.
His persistence and energetic devotion to a few well-defined problems that he pushed as far as he could, was characteristic of him both as a scientist and as a personality. The scientist Pavlov was a real citizen of his country. His name is the symbol of the high spirituality of Russian intelligentsia, conscience of Russian science. He was always very attentive to problems, ideas and hopes of his homeland, Russia. I.P. Pavlov is the symbol of Russia, he possesses all the best properties of the Russian nation. In our city there is a wooden house in which he was born and where he spent his childhood. Nowadays Pavlov’s house is a museum. It is situated in the street named after our great countryman.

Pavlov’s museum & The monuments to our great countryman Ivan Pavlov, the Nobel Prize Winner, the honourable member of 130 Academies, you can see in Ryazan.
