There are many places in Zabaikalye connected with the name of Chingishan, but one of the most fascinating is The Chingisov Stone. It is a big granitic stone with the inscription on it. Originally, this stone was situated not far from the ruins of the city on the river Hirhir. The interpreters could easily read the name of Chingishan on this stone. Since then it’s become famous as The Chingisov Stone. In 1832 this stone was sent to St. Petersburg’s Ministry of Finance, then to Asian Museum of Science Academy and finally to the Hermitage.
In 1851 the inscription on the stone was translated by famous scientist D. Banzarov. The translation was: “When Chingishan came back after the invasion on sartagul’s land and mongols gathered in Buga-Chichigai, Isunke (Chingishan’s nephew) received an inheritance of 335 Hondogor’s warriors”. In 1927 another scientist I. Klukin made a new translation of the inscription: “When Chingishan came back after the seizure of power of sartagul’s, he arranged a shooting match, and Isunke shot an arrow from a bow at a distance 335 yards.”
Both translations agree that the reason of making this inscription was an award to Isunke from Chingishan.
