Zvenigorod. Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery.
Алексеева Дарья Константиновна,
Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, located on the left bank of the Moskva River near Zvenigorod, was established in 14 century on Storozhy Hill by St. Savva. You can see monuments to St. Savva in front of the monastery and another one to St.Savva and Yury Zvenigorodsky in the centre of the town. The cloister is surrounded by a thick white stone wall with towers. The various buildings within the grounds include some beautiful churches, the brethren’s, the palace of Tzar Aleksey Mikhailovitch and a festive chamber built for Tsarina Maria Iliynichna (Tsaritsyny Palaty). The local museum is situated on the territory of the monastery as well. The guides tell you interesting things about everyday family life, the customs and habits that were there in Russia in the past. A visit to the local Kremlin, called Gorodok, is a must too, because there you can see the only fully preserved example of 14 century Muscovite architecture, the Assumption Cathedral (1399), decorated with frescoes by Andrei Rublev. It is not far from the monastery, so tourists can walk there and enjoy the clean air and wonderful sight of the old wood around. After the trip, you may have a rest in а small cafe, located nearby, and taste traditional bread kvass and delicious pies, baked in the monastery. The peace and quiet of this wonderful place offers tired visitors a welcome, refreshing break from their busy lives.
