Zvenigorod. Famous people
Алексеева Дарья Константиновна,
Zvenigorod - one of the oldest Russian towns founded in 12 century is situated about 50 km west from Moscow. Many famous people lived and worked in Zvenigorod and its neighbourhood.
The great Russian poet Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin spent the days of his childhood in the estate Zakharovo not far from the town of Zvenigorod. The impressions of those years caused the poet’s interest in the period of Russian history connected with Savvino-Storozhevsky monastery. In 1830s Pushkin translated the life (biography) of St. Savva Storozhevsky from Old (Church) Slavonic into Russian. In 1980s, Russian writer Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860-1904) worked as a doctor in Zvenigorod and there he began to publish his stories. The building of the hospital still remains here. The public library of Zvenigorod has a name of Chekhov. In 2010 a monument to A. P. Chehkov was set up in the central park of the town.
Isaak Ilyich Levitan (1860-1900), the famous Russian painter, created some wonderful landscapes near Zvenigorod. The most famous one “Bridge. Savvinskaya Sloboda” is displayed in Tretyakov Gallery.
A talented actress Lubov Petrovna Orlova (1902-1975) was born in Zvenigorod. Now there is Lubov Orlova Culture Centre in Moskovskaya street. Many children form Zvenigorod and its neigbourhood go to music school named after S.I.Taneyev (1856-1915), a Russian musician, who lived, worked and died nearby, in a village of Duydkovo. Taneev’s museum is located there.
Zvenigorod is a wonderful town with rich history, beautiful landscapes and remarkable sights, and it is definitely worth visiting.
