Our town Ust’ Kut is not similar to other provincial Siberian towns. It has its own unique features. Founded in 1931, Ust’ Kut is famous for one of the most important river port in Russia, a big junction for the Baikal-Amur railway and a wonderful resort.
Ust’ Kut is an unusual town. Firstly, it is situated on the banks of the River Lena and lasts 40 kilometers along them, having the width only 1.5 – 2.5 kilometers at the same time. The town is surrounded by picturesque hills and they prevent from the growth of the township. Secondly, our area is rich in immense mineral and natural resources. Thirdly, it has three names. You may say: “It is impossible”, but it is quite true information. The town is located in a mouth of a small river Kuta, so the first name of our settlement is Ust’ Kut. If you fly by the plane you will get to the airport “Ust’ Kut”. You will arrive on railway station Lena by train, consequently the second name is Lena. Moreover you will come in port “Osetrovo” by steam-ship. Osetrovo is the third name of our part. Every summer tons of goods are carried by ships to Sakha Yakutia that is why the port Osetrovo is often called “The gate to the North”.
The history of the name Osetrovo is interesting. As the legend says, a long time ago the rich Siberian merchant bought the lands in this region. His surname was Osetrov. He founded a small village, which was named after the owner. The second story says that local merchants liked sturgeons very much. The special fishing brigades were equipped to bring sturgeons. They brought sturgeons on special little boats. One of such little boats was wrecked and sturgeons left into water. Since then the settlement had the name “Osetrovo”.
In 1954 Ust’Kut got the status of the town; however the names of the port and railway station were not changed. Today Ust’Kut is a big transport centre. Timber industry is also an important sector of our town.
To sum up, the decision of the geographical riddle is simple: a small Siberian town, having three names is Ust’Kut, Lena and Osetrovo.
