My native town is Novokuznetsk. I was born there and this town will always hold a very special place in my heart. My home town attracts attention because of the numerous places of interest and its industrial potential. But as it is often said there is no future without the past. And I want to begin my narration with a couple of words about the history of my home town.
The first stockaded town was founded on the bank of the Condom river in 1618. Before this time there used to be dense forests on the territory occupied by modern town of Novokuznetsk now. Originally the town was ruled by the representatives of armored forces their title was “voevoda”. The aim of the people was to explore the territory in order to support the progress of the country. The first inhabitants of Novokuznetsk had to fight with the local tribes (shortsy, kumandintsy, altaytsy, teleuty). But this way of development is typical for nearly every nation.
Nowadays Novokuznetsk has a lot of places of interest. Among them are: Kuznetsk Fortress, Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral, house-museum of F.M. Dostoevsky. It is interesting that prominent Russian writer and thinker lived in our town for 22 days and married Mariya Isayeva in the local church. The name of the church is Odigitrievskaya. And it is noticeable that they got married secretly, which is also quite romantic. One more distinguishable point in the life of my home town is the Kuznetsk Metallurgical Industrial Plant. The industrial potential of Novokuznetsk was revealed in the full blossom during the years of Great Patriotic War 1941 – 1945. Hard and honorable labor of the citizen helped the Soviet army to defeat the Nazi.
There are a lot of plants of ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, coal mines and open-pit mines on the territory of the city now. But in spite of it the city is sunk in verdure. Vladimir Mayakovsky called Novokuznetsk the city of gardens. This fact is also revealed in its hymn. “This city belongs to me I’m proud that here I was born My father and elder brother here toil at open-hearth furnace and at coalface And I love it, this city of gardens, the city I belong”.
